1) Probably about 7 or 8. I bought an egg-box with six balls of yarn and some plastic needles from a local christmas fayre, and knitted a never-ending scarf for one of my dolls. Although I think I actually got the hang of crochet first, because it was more free-form.
2) My mum, possibly with help from Grandma. They were both prolific knitters, and not only knitted for myself and my sister, but for our dolls too.
