Lizard Ridge - automatic wrap version

Remember I posted the first version of this pattern, and you had to manually wrap each stitch when changing direction? No more! For some reason this pattern is no longer a multiple of 8 though. No, I don't know why, either. Ask a mathematician (ie not me!).
Pattern is a multiple of 14 + 1

AW: Automatic Wrap - place needle nearest carriage to hold

R1: K 3 rows, ending COR. Set CARR to hold
R4: K13, place nearest N to CARR to hold, skip 8 Ns, place rest in hold, K8, AW, K7, AW, K6, AW, K5, AW, K4, AW, place next 17 Ns to UWP, *K20, AW, skip next 8 needles, place rem Ns in hold, K8, AW, K7, AW, K6, AW, K5, AW, K4, AW, rep from * until 5 sts remain in hold (and only 3 sts rem in WP), K to end. Cancel hold.
R5: K2 rows

Change to CY
R7: K3 rows. Set CARR to hold
R10: K6, AW, K5, K5, AW, K4, AW, put further 17 Ns to UWP, K across, place nearest N to CARR to hold, skip 8 Ns, place rest in hold, K8, AW, K7, AW, K6, AW, K5, AW, K4, AW, place next 17 Ns to UWP, *K20, place nearest N to CARR to hold, skip 8 Ns, place rest in hold, K8, AW, K7, AW, K6, AW, K5, AW, K4, AW, place next 17 Ns to UWP, rep from * until 13 sts remain in hold (and 3 sts rem in WP), K to end, K6, AW, K5, K5, AW, K4. Cancel hold.
R11: K2 rows

Change to MY

Repeat these 12 rows to form pattern.

I am a passionate machine knitter, making sweaters and blankets in many punchcard patterns from Noro Kureyon and Silk Garden for local galleries and farmers markets.
I live on the Grand Mesa in Colorado, US, unfortunately far from other machine knitters and depending heavily upon the Internet for new ideas. I appreciate your short row tutorial and have found it great to illustrate the concept. BUT...
I am completely in love with your Lizard Ridge afghan, but am not technically proficient enough to translate/transpose the hand knitting pattern or your MK short row tutorial into the LR pattern. I have mild dyslexia, so pictures are better than written directions for me in learning something new.
Would you be able to direct me?
I cannot quite get started with Row 4 -
Where and how does the "Knit 13" start - on the right, with needles in working position and all the rest in Hold?
And how does one next "Skip 8 needles"? Which ones?
I hope that you can direct me. Your work and blog is a "fun" inspiration for me.
Thank you,
Jane Dupree

The K13 starts from the right hand edge - ie, put everything into hold except the first 13 needles on the right hand edge (which should be nearest your carriage). Knit across. Put the 13th needle into hold (which would leave you with 12 needles still in work) - counting towards the right, leave 8 needles in work and put the remaining 4 needles into hold. Knit across (you just knitted 8 stitches). *Put the next needle nearest the carriage into hold, knit across, rep from * until the next pass would be only 3 needles. Add a further 17 needles into UWP, knit across. Put the next nearest needle into hold, leave 8 in work, put the rest (on the right) into hold. Repeat the patterning on these eight needles.

THANK YOU!!!!
I woke up at 3:30 am, still puzzling, and found your email!!!
Your directions filled in the missing pieces for me. Not sure why I was so confused -probably overthinking it, as usual.
Am expecting a large UPS delivery today from Knitting Fever - lots of Noro, plus some hemp in good colors (just to be a little trendy for my younger clients).
Can't wait for the delivery... am starting the LR project just as soon as I finish my coffee!
Would love to have a sizable length ready to use as a "centerpiece" at art fairs this summer, without compromising the "main fare" of sweaters and other standards.
Will report back to you with photo.
Many thanks for your assistance in making my retirement (from hospice) a more joyful experience.

I have been trying to chart this out like the other version and the only way I could make it work was to leave all 4 needles in WP at the end of each “cycle” and then bring 16 back into play to make each K20 row. That gives you a repeat of 13+4. So 30, 43 and 56 all work.
